V. Engage in professional growth and leadership.

Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their

school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.
  • Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning

  • Exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community building and developing the leadership and technology skills of others

  • Evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning

  • Contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community

Reflection:   The first artifact I selected for this standard was the communication tools project.  This was a collaborative project that focused on each member researching and sharing not only a previously researched tool, but a new educational digital tool.  This was a multi-student effort to evaluate research and apply these current tools in the educational environment including creative applications to improve learning, developing skills, and evaluating  current research in order to make effective use of resources to support student learning.

Next,  I selected the reflection project for IT 720.   Reflection is essential in professional growth.  This is an example of self renewal related to my teaching profession, primary teacher for sixth grade reading, and demonstrates my understanding of the interrelation of class, school and community.

Finally, I chose the website I created in the effort to communicate what R.T.I is related to reading and how teachers can use current school provided applications to determine initial data to set student goals. Then this website describes what steps a teachers should follow next to assign and gather information about students.  I selected this website because the information can be used to benefit student learning.

Artifacts:  This standard's focus is growing and leading.  Reflection on a regular basis and looking for options to participate in learning related to technology with the emphasis always being on student learning is foundational.  Also, using reflection and continuous learning to lead others in the field and community is a fundamental mindset for standard five.  Not only have I witnessed leadership in my professors and fellow students, but I have had opportunity to reflect on assignments, discuss with classmates, and explore creative applications available in technology to improve student learning.

Future Learning Goals

As an educator I have learned to embrace the continual process of self reflection and professional development.  I am creating a series of short tutorials using screencasting software to demonstrate for my administrators and fellow teachers how to navigate and use the various programs within the Global Scantron site to support student growth in reading and math.  I truly enjoy learning and technology, so I look forward to the opportunity to stay current in this field of study.
